Teen Novels:
Woof! by Allan Ahlberg. About a British boy who keeps turning into a dog. This is a famous classic. Hawksong by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes. Snake shapeshifters and bird shapeshifters have been at war for hundreds of years, and both species of shapeshifter are slowly becoming extinct as a result. One hawk shapeshifter, a princess of her people, tries to stop the war by romancing a snake boy from the other side of the war.
The Unicorn Sonata by Peter S. Beagle. Unicorns (who can transform to human shape at will) befriend a lonely Hispanic teenager. When these unicorns transform, they split- the body becoming a human, and the horn becoming an exotic musical instrument. Wolf Pack by Edo Van Belkom. A Canadian ranger rescues four wolf cubs from a forest fire, only to learn that they are really werewolves. He raises them as his own children, but runs into trouble with an evil scientist.
Lone Wolf by Edo Van Belkom. Upcoming teen novel, due for release in October 2005. The Folk Keeper by Franny Billingsley. A girl who can control the evil fairies gradually comes upon clues of her selkie ancestry. This book is highly acclaimed. See the author's homepage.
Wounded: The Wereling I by Stephen Cole. Kate is from a family of werewolves, and she dreads the day that she will first transform. Then Kate's parents kidnap a boy, turn him into a werewolf, and try to make him be Kate's mate. Soon Kate and Tom are on the run from Kate's relatives, battling their werewolf instincts as they seek a cure. Prey: The Wereling II by Stephen Cole. The sequel to Wounded. Kate and Tom find no rest in New York City. Still fighting their own werewolf instincts, they are wanted by the police.
Resurrection: The Wereling III by Stephen Cole. Kate and Tom must battle an organization that wants the world to be ruled by werewolves. The Weeping Werewolf by Bruce Coville. In this 80-page book for younger teens, a wizard named Moongooble must collect the tears of a werewolf.
A Circle of Cats by Charles de Lint. A cat transformation novel. Does not qualify as a werecat, simply as a transformation. Night Of The Werewolf by Franklin W. Dixon. This is a reprint of a popular book in the Hardy Boys teen mystery series. The Hardy boys, Frank and Joe, travel to the Adirondack Mountains on vacation and end up investigating a werewolf.
My Father the Werewolf by Henry Garfield. Two teenagers, brother and sister, must try to control their irresponsible father, who has recently become a werewolf. The Monster Book by Christopher Golden. This is a nonfiction supplement to the TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with information about the monsters (both villains and monstrous good guys) that were portrayed in the show, alongside info about these creatures in folklore. Prowlers by Christopher Golden. A teenager becomes a werewolf hunter, guided by the ghost of a friend who was killed by werewolves. Laws of Nature (Prowlers, Book 2) by Christopher Golden. A fledgling werewolf hunter tracks werewolves in a small town.
Predator and Prey (Prowlers, Book 3) by Christopher Golden. Jack, the werewolf hunter, is caught between two problems: an assassin hired by werewolves, and an evil spirit that is able to destroy ghosts. Wild Things (Prowlers, Book 4) by Christopher Golden. The werewolves have decided to unite under one leader and attempt to overthrow humanity. It is up to Jack to stop them.
Dark Dreams by Ann Hodgman. This is the first book in the Children of the Night series, about a high school student who becomes a werewolf. This and its sequel are more like two halves of the same novel than separate books. Dark Music by Ann Hodgman. The 2nd book in the Children of the Night series. Romance between two werewolves.
The Wolving Time by Patrick Jennings. A teenage werewolf living during the time of the witch persecutions experiences his first transformations. The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub. Thirteen-year-old Jack Sawyer tries to save his dying mother. He ends up journeying across a fantasyland, with a werewolf as his companion.
Blood and Chocolate by Annette Curtis Klause. This is a famous classic. A female werewolf tries to start a romance with a human, called a "meat boy" by her pack. Witchlight by L.J. Smith. This ninth book in the popular Night World series tells about a teenage female werecat who falls in love with a boy who has been promised to another girl. Night of the Werecat by R. L. Stine. A girl obtains a mysterious charm, and begins turning into a cat.
Dragon's Bait by Vivian Vande Velde. A falsely accused witch is sentenced to be fed to a dragon. But the dragon turns out to be a shapeshifter who can assume human form, and he wants to help her. Scarlet Moon by Debbie Viguie. A female blacksmith with a witch for a grandmother meets a werewolf.
