The Wolf Hunt by Gillian Bradshaw. A fantasy novel based on what is perhaps the most famous werewolf legend of all time (Bisclavret, as made into a medieval lay by Marie de France). A good werewolf tries to prevail over people's prejudice and a scheme cooked up by his evil wife. See more... The Passion by Donna Boyd. This is one of the better-selling werewolf novels to come out in recent years. War for the Oaks by Emma Bull. This is an old classic that has just come into print again. It was the first successful "urban fantasy" novel, mixing the fairy realm with technology and a modern setting. Canyons by P. D. Cacek. Lesson #1 for werewolves: do not transform to save the life of a tabloid reporter, as it only leads to trouble for the entire pack. This gets very good reviews. Once again, the government it up to its old trick of keeping werewolves in secret labs, trying to figure out what makes them tick. This novel follows the life of one boy after he leaves the lab. Bearwalker by Steven Lee Climer and Lori A. Soard. About a creature of American Indian lore, the bearwalker. An Indian turns into a bear whenever he gets angry (and then generally kills everyone in sight). He becomes an alcoholic when he finds that alcohol suppresses his transformations. Underworld Book 2: Blood Enemy by Greg Cox. This second book in the series is a prequel, telling more about the history of the conflict between werewolves and vampires. See more... Wilderness by Dennis Danvers. This is a classic that just keeps coming back into print. Also one of my personal favorites. People generally like it as long as they don't expect it to be a horror novel. It is a very realistic drama about the problems that might actually beset a modern American werewolf. See more...
Derik's Bane by MaryJanice Davidson. This humorous paranormal romance makes fun of the entire genre. A werewolf is assigned to kill a woman who is the reincarnation of someone truly evil, but he falls in love instead. This is the first novel in the new Wyndham Werewolves series. By the author of Undead and Unwed and other humorous vampire novels. See reviews at amazon.com. Wolf Moon by Charles de Lint. I believe this was Charles de Lint's first novel. It has a reputation as the best werewolf novel where the werewolf is a good guy. It is pure fantasy, with not a touch of horror. See more...
Dun Lady's Jess by Doranna Durgin. A horse from a fantasy realm is transported to our world and simultaneously transformed into a woman. From then on, she is a shapeshifter who transforms between woman and horse. There is a second novel and a third novel in this werebeast trilogy. Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris. A vampire novel with werewolf minor characters. It is listed here mainly because it is widely considered one of the best vampire novels to come out in recent years, so it is undoubtedly worth a read. Chrome Circle by Mercedes Lackey. About rock'n roll elves and all sorts of weirdness, part of the SERRAted Edge series about the fairy kingdom interacting with the modern world. The previous novels don't need to be read first, as each is fairly self-contained. The main character's love interest is a werefox who might want to kill him. Diplomacy of Wolves by Holly Lisle. A big, epic fantasy novel about clashes between major noble houses and the internal politics and intrigues that go on. The main character is a female werewolf. In this parody of the paranormal romance genre, a clueless heroine falls for a dark, mysterious stranger who just happens to be a shapeshifting dragon.
Gil's All Fright Diner by A. Lee Martinez. In this humorous novel, the owner of an all-night diner hires a werewolf and a vampire to get rid of some zombies. See more... A Boston cop happens to be a rather unusual variety of werewolf: a heroic, perpetually angry outsider who managed to get stuck permanently in half-human half-wolf form. Guardian of the Promise (Merlin's Descendants, #4) by Irene Radford. Merlin's descendants must save the queen from an army of werewolves. Shapes by Steve Vance. This is theoretically a sequel to The Hyde Effect, but it can be read separately without any problem. The shapeshifters in this novel are not the evil monsters that they have been made out to be, but this is a horror novel with lots of blood and they are not exactly good either. Darker Than You Think by Jack Williamson. This older horror novel broke new ground when it first came out. An engaging anti-hero discovers his own power to shapeshift into many different animals, after being lured into a lifestyle of killing by a female werewolf who is also a witch. Killing Moon by Rebecca York. This romance novel is making quite a splash. The werewolf is a good guy.
