Werewolf & Shapeshifter Movies:
The 10th Kingdom (DVD) Unlike most of the films listed here, it is a good movie, not just good for a werewolf movie. We have complex storylines and adult themes (even though it is marketed to kids). The werewolf is one of the three main characters. We also have two minor characters (a man and a dog) who switch bodies.
Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein (DVD) It actually contains all three of the classic movie monsters, including the wolfman. Enjoyable for those who like older movies, and entirely suitable for children.
Akira Kurosawa's Dreams (DVD) This masterful collection of eight short films contains a segment that is the only widely-available kitsune (werefox) film in America.
An American Werewolf in London (DVD) Two young men hitchhike across a werewolf-infested piece of British moor. This is generally rated as one of the top 3 werewolf movies of all time, even though its mixture of comedy and gross-out horror is not for everyone.
An American Werewolf in Paris (DVD) In this sort-of sequel to An American Werewolf in London, the daughter of the werewolf from the first movie is now grown-up and living in Paris when some American tourists arrive and get attacked by her werewolf friends.
Arizona Werewolf (DVD) Also known as Werewolf and by many other names. Widely known as the worst werewolf movie ever made, and as one of the 10 worst movies of all time. Bad movie fans, drool in anticipation! All others, run for cover!
Bad Moon (DVD) This is reputed to be a fairly good rendition of the standard werewolf plot, with good atmosphere and one of the best werewolf costumes seen so far. However, the transformation special effects are next to nothing. I guess you can't have a decent plot, a great costume and good transformation special effects all in the same werewolf film.
The Beast Must Die (DVD) A campy 1970's mystery about a werewolf at a hunting lodge. Only for fans who love camp and cheese, and who don't require nudity and gore in their horror films.
The Beast of Bray Road (DVD) A low-budget werewolf movie based very loosely on real-life legends of the Beast of Bray Road.
Big Fish (DVD) As a man skeptically listens to his dying father's account of his life (including meeting a minor character werewolf) he must decide if he should be satisfied with these stories or remain angry and frustrated with his father forever.
Blood Moon (DVD) I liked this quirky film. Originally released as a TV movie called Wolf Girl, it is never clear whether an actual werewolf is in it or not, but it certainly is heavy in werewolf symbolism.
Blood of the Werewolf A low-budget anthology of three short werewolf films, it has garnered some attention because it has better-than-average plots for such low-budget fare.
Brotherhood of the Wolf (DVD) If you can take the subtitles and genre-mixing (Action, Kung-fu, Western, Historical, Horror), then this is probably a good movie. However, it is not precisely a werewolf movie even though it is based on a werewolf legend. To say why not would give away too much of the surprise ending.
The Brothers Grimm Two folklore collectors who are really con artists run into trouble when they find themselves battling real monsters for once. A werewolf is a significant secondary character; he is the main henchman of the top bad guy. Like in actual fairy tales, the werewolf here turns into a real wolf, not a demonic hairy monster.
Cat People/The Curse of the Cat People: A Val Lewton Horror Double Feature (DVD) Two classic films in one package, the first being the most influential werecat movie ever, and the second being a decent sequel that is about the ghost of a werecat. Both films are also available in a collection of 10 Val Lewton horror films on DVD.
Cat People (DVD) A classic werecat movie from the 1980s. It is supposedly a remake of Cat People, but the storyline is so different, it is like a whole new film. Its worst problem is that it overdoes the gore.
The Company of Wolves (DVD) A spooky fairy-tale of a werewolf movie, it hearkens back to the legends while showing some eye-popping (and disgusting) special effects.
The Curse (DVD) In this well-done horror comedy, a young woman suffers from monthly werewolf transformations that coincide with her PMS. She will kill people until she manages to find a man she truly loves.
Cursed (DVD) This movie was neutered in the theaters as a PG-13 film, the video version is unrated and hopefully that will close up some plot holes. A sister and brother both get bitten during a werewolf attack, and both of them begin the conversion into werewolves themselves.
The Curse of the Werewolf (VHS) An old British classic. We are given a great deal of background history before the main character is even born. Then, things get interesting as the little boy begins manifesting his werewolf nature, but the movie soon settles back into its old habits. Towards the end, it really looks as if it is going to go somewhere, but then the werewolf is abruptly killed.
DarkWolf I've been told that this is a very bad movie. Then, when I saw it, I liked it a little bit, perhaps because my expectations were already so low. The plot is amazingly silly, and the oddball mix of special effects includes a gorilla suit with the head cut off and a werewolf mask (which looks like it was purchased at Wal-Mart) substituted.
Dog Soldiers (DVD) This werewolf movie is one of several films that revitalized the werewolf genre around the turn of the millenium. A group of British soldiers training in a remote area of Scotland get trapped in a farmhouse by a pack of werewolves.
Exhumed: An Epic Anthology of the Undead (DVD) Three short films, The Forest of Death, The Shadow of Tomorrow and Last Rumble, are linked so that they kind of form one longer narrative. Last Rumble is about a war between gangs of vampires and gangs of werewolves.
Eyes of the Werewolf (DVD) After getting an eye transplant from a surgeon with shady credentials, a man begins transforming into a werewolf.
Ginger Snaps (DVD) A movie that is popular with teens and goths, it is brimming with girl power, dark humor and blood. It is a "teenage werewolf" movie with several twists on the old formulas, including the fact that the werewolf is female. Two goth sisters have their relationship tested when one becomes a werewolf.
Ginger Snaps II: Unleashed (DVD) In this sequel to Ginger Snaps, Ginger's sister is now infected with lycanthropy. Worse yet, she is mistakenly put in a drug rehab clinic for troubled teen girls, cutting her off from the wolfsbane she needs to inject in order to stave off her transformation into a werewolf.
Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning (DVD) The third movie is kind of a prequel. Starring the same two actresses as the original, this upcoming film presumably tells the story of how werewolves first came to Canada.
Half-Caste (DVD) This imitation of The Blair Witch Project is a pseudo-documentary about the leopard people of South Africa. These werecats turn out to be all too real and turn against the student filmmakers.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (DVD) Just as in the novel, there is a surprise werewolf in this movie, along with several other shapeshifters of various species. However, the werewolf looks much different in the movie than it did in the novel.
The Howling (DVD) This is a highly-rated werewolf film, from the werewolf craze of the early 1980s. Just ignore the numerous sequels (see why you probably don't want to watch any Howling sequels).
Ladyhawke (DVD) For those shapeshifter fans who prefer fairy tales to horror. A male werewolf and a female werehawk suffer from their transformation curses because of the timing involved. The only time Isabeau is human is during the night, and her lover Navarre is only human by day. Therefore, the two lovers are constantly together but can never make love. With the help of a young thief, they hope to defeat the bad guy and lift their curses.
The Lunar Pack A collection of three short werewolf films that have been getting good reviews for such low-budget features. Also see the IMDB page for The Lunar Pack.
Miss Werewolf (VHS) Another notoriously bad David Nelson film, popular with Ed Wood fans and that sort of "bad movies are good" crowd. A female werewolf rampages in Chicago. Read a review or read an interview with the director.
Orgy of the Dead (DVD) A horror writer and his wife are forced to watch topless zombie girls dance in a cemetary that is infested with ghouls, a mummy and a werewolf. This is a legendary bad film made by Ed Wood, but not one of his "best." Don't watch it unless you are already an Ed Wood fan.
Rage of the Werewolf (aka Planet of the Werewolves) This one might have been great if it had been funded properly, but it fails to pull off its special effects and high-tech locale. See the producer's website for a couple of other low-budget werewolf movies and info about upcoming werewolf films.
Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island (DVD) Scooby-Doo and pals investigate an island where the monsters are real. What they don't know is that there is something here even worse than the ghosts and zombies: werecats.
The Secret of Roan Inish (DVD) Highly acclaimed selkie (seal people) movie for the whole family. It is set in Ireland, and is full of rustic charm and authentic culture.
The Seventh Stream (DVD) Set in Ireland and based on the folklore of selkies. A widower falls in love with a selkie who has been trapped in human form because someone stole her magic sealskin.
The Shaggy Dog (DVD) Another family movie, this classic 1959 Disney film stars a weredog. It could have easily been called I was a Teenage Weredog. This is one of my favorite shapeshifter movies.
Sleepwalkers (DVD) A mother and son team of soul-sucking werecats move into a small town, intent on finding a virginal victim. They transform into hairless cat-monsters, real cats hate them for some reason, and the plot never quite hangs together.
Teen Wolf (DVD) One of the classic 1980's high school movies, it is a must for Michael J. Fox fans. Ignore the sequel and you'll be happier.
Underworld (DVD) This is the new extended version, with even more extra stuff than the previous DVD. A sexy female vampire hunts down werewolves in a dark, highly fashionable world that owes more than a little to The Matrix.
Van Helsing (DVD) An attempt to bring 1940s classic horror monsters into the 21st century, this extreme-action film is lots of fun as long as you are fully willing to suspend disbelief and are able to enjoy well-done cheese. The three werewolves are among the most memorable monsters, outshining Dracula and Frankenstein. There is also an "ultimate edition" that includes more extra stuff, plus the classic films The Wolf Man, Dracula and Frankenstein.
Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (DVD) This is the first feature-length film with Wallace and Gromit, the claymation stars of numerous award-winning short films. Wallace has started a humane pest control business to keep rabbits out of people's gardens, but then a monstrous rabbit, a shapeshifter with a ravenous appetite for vegetables, begins to undermine Wallace's business.
Werewolf in a Girl's Dormitory (DVD) For those who enjoy low-class 1960's movie cheese.
Werewolf of London (VHS) One of the old black & white classics. Many people mistakenly say this is the first werewolf film ever. It is not. It is simply the first "modern" werewolf film, where the werewolf transforms into a hairy fanged guy instead of an actual wolf.
Werewolf Shadow (DVD) One of the better Paul Naschy films, also known as The Werewolf vs. the Vampire Woman. Get ready for some dubbing and/or subtitling!
Wilderness (DVD) Based roughly on the novel, with major story alterations. Female werewolf loose in Britain.
Wolf (DVD) An updated version of the old werewolf plot. This is probably my favorite werewolf movie, though the special effects could have been much better.
Wolfen (DVD) Does it qualify as a werewolf movie? Different people disagree about this. The people who like it tend to be those who favor mysteries and suspense over gore and seeing the monster.
The Wolf Man (VHS) The most famous werewolf movie ever made, though not the best by a long shot.
The Wolf Man- The Legacy Collection (DVD) This collection includes four werewolf films, The Wolf Man, Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (which is the first sequel to The Wolf Man, and which I think is far better than the first film), Werewolf of London (another classic, but not in the same series, see above), and She-Wolf of London, which is not in the same series, and is not very good.
The Monster Legacy Collection (Frankenstein / Dracula / The Wolf Man) (DVD) This larger collection claims to contain all films in Universal's famous series that dealt with these three monsters. The specs say it contains 13 films, combining The Wolf Man- The Legacy Collection with two similar collections of Frankenstein films and Dracula films.
Universal's Classic Monster Collection (DVD) Yet another collection that contains The Wolf Man, it also contains each of the premiere films that star the other main monsters of Universal. The included films are: Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, The Bride of Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, The Phantom of the Opera, and The Creature from the Black Lagoon.

Upcoming Werewolf Movies
Hollywood is always buzzing about new movies that it plans to make. Many of them never appear, and this seems to be especially true in the case of werewolf movies. The following films may or may not come to a theater near you someday, but I thought that you might like to know about them ahead of time:
The movie Night Watch, falsely scheduled for release several times in the last year, is already being hailed as Russia's first blockbuster. Recently, it was released in just a few American theaters and made a surprising amount of money, but it might not be released widely in American theaters. Night Watch is about a precarious pact between the forces of good and evil, set in modern-day Moscow. One of the characters can transform into a tiger, and there are other shapeshifters in it.
The werewolf film Cursed, released in February 2005, ended up going through a complete rewrite from the earliest plotline announcements. So much new material was added that the old film is being re-assembled into a separate film, and is planned to be released under the title Cursed 2.
This is not the only werewolf movie sequel in the works. Sequel mania has taken hold everywhere. There is a planned TV show in the works, to be called Transylvania, based on the recent movie Van Helsing, as well as at least one planned movie sequel. The Underworld series, which includes the second film Underworld: Evolution, is planning a third movie to complete the trilogy.
The most exciting news of all for werewolf fans is the rumors that surround Spider-Man 3. It is thought that John Jameson, a character who became a werewolf in the comic book version of Spider-Man, may appear in Spider-Man 3 as a werewolf and as an opponent of Spider-Man. This character appeared in the movie Spider-Man 2, so it seems as if the writers are trying to set up this situation for a future Spider-Man film.
There is also a planned animated kids' TV show with werewolves and weredragons. It is called Guardians of Luna.
A werewolf film called Freeborn is not only in the works, it is also asking for input on its werewolf design!. Freeborn is not a low-budget affair. This one has a budget of 6 million, and is slated for a theatrical release. See the Official Site. Freeborn was originally called Devoured, early in production.
A low-budget Texas film called Lycan Rising is about good werewolves who must fight for their lives with werewolf hunters.
Other werewolf projects are set farther in the future and are more likely to evaporate. One of them is a movie version of the novel Bitten that will probably have Angelina Jolie (the star of the Lara Croft: Tomb Raider movies) as a female werewolf.
Another is a movie version of the comic book Werewolf by Night. This project was started as part of the current fad: in the wake of Spiderman and its monetary success, Hollywood is scrambling to get more comic books turned into movies. Werewolf by Night is just one of about a dozen comic-book projects that are currently in the planning stages, but it is taking much longer than most and has few updates.
On May 19, 2002, Michael Jackson announced that he will be making a $20 million dollar werewolf movie starring himself, to be titled Wolfed.
Another movie that had originally been announced for a 2005 release is simply titled Werewolf.
The planned werewolf movie Full Moon Fever is based on a so-far-unpublished graphic novel by Joe Casey. From the description, it seems as if this might not count as a real werewolf movie, since the werewolves are said to remain always in wolfman form and don't transform.
In September 2002, Miramax bought a script written by Michael Chabon for a movie titled Summerland (based on a book of the same title). It is a surreal fantasy for children, combining baseball, werefoxes, magic and a wide range of mythical creatures.
According to USA Today, a movie called Little Red Riding Hood is in the works, based on the fairy tale, but with the wolf replaced by a werewolf. The former N'Sync member Joey Fatone is set to play the werewolf. I have yet to find a link about this upcoming movie.
Vortex pictures is planning a movie called Skinwalkers. Judging from the title, it would seem to be about Navajo werewolves.
Previously announced projects that seem to be dead (but still might miraculously arise) include a planned third movie in the Teen Wolf series (after seeing Teen Wolf Too I think it's a good thing this project died). An all-CGI remake of Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman (an old Universal classic) also expired in the early stages, after producing an impressive test film segment (computer generated animation looks much more realistic in black-and-white). Producers have been thinking about a remake of I was a Teenage Werewolf for years now, but there doesn't seem to be much interest despite the current wave of remake fever sweeping Hollywood. A couple years ago, it was announced that a big-name producer had paid $3 million for a werewolf comedy by the scriptwriter of My Cousin Vinny called Bad Dog, but as I haven't heard anything about it for a while I think it has probably been dropped. There was also some buzz about a biker werewolf film, a remake of Werewolves on Wheels, that seems to have gone away. Likewise, the rapper Ice Cube is supposed to star in a werewolf movie called Stray Dawgz, but it seems increasingly certain that it will never be made. Blood and Chocolate, about a female werewolf trying to decide where her loyalties are (based on the young adult novel of the same name) has had manys ups and downs in its long, slow trek towards the theaters. It was cancelled due to the death of its director and kept having plot changes, but it now has a new director and looks like it has a possibility of being made, though updates are few and far between. More information about the Blood and Chocolate movie can be found at Bloody Disgusting and at Princess Wolf: The Unofficial Annette Curtis Klause Site.
Other planned werewolf films are currently little better than rumors. A new trilogy in the Howling series has been mentioned by producers, but there is practically no information available. There is supposed to be a spin-off of the film Blade: Trinity that will be about werewolves, to be called Nightstalkers, but it probably depends on how well Blade: Trinity sells in the DVD market. The film Nightstalkers is set up by an alternate ending that is only available on the Blade: Trinity DVD. There are rumors that the film rights to the book Howling Mad by Peter David have been purchased. This is an old classic, one of the better werewolf comedies. Rumor also has it that Leafstorm, a film company based in Britain, is planning a werewolf documentary, as yet unnamed. The werewolf film Lycanthrope seems to be listed only on the official website, and there's hardly any information there. It is rumored that the upcoming film The Transfiguration of Harold Maines may have a horse transformation in it.
